THE ATLANTIC COAST
Just 15 minutes from Challans there are a host of seaside resorts in very varied settings. Set off to explore the vast beach and embankment at St Jean de Monts, the harbour and fishing village at St Gilles Croix de Vie, the town of Pornic, or the wild beauty of the Île de Noirmoutier or the Île d'Yeu!
L'ABBAYE DE COUDRIE
An historic monument dating from the 12th century which was modified in the 15th century, this ancient church is not far from the village of la Flocellière and it is just off the road to St Christophe du Ligneron. A sanctuary of an ancient commandry of the Knights Templar, it was built in 1130 by Hugues de Payens, the co-founder of the order.
LE LAVOIR DU GUY
This wash house in the Impasse du Guy in Challans was built in 1886-1888 and was restored in 1988. The water for the wash house came from the du Guy stream until 1937. After that it was connected to the municipal water supply until it was abandoned in the 1950s / early 1960s. A stroll around the streets of Challans and the vicinity will reveal traces of the town's past as well as its architectural highlights.
